Sharifa Asmar

Originally from the NY/NJ metro area, Sharifa met Oriental dance at college in New Mexico, and they've been inseparable ever since.

The music speaks to her heart and its physical expression, Oriental dance, is her passion.

Since then, Sharifa has danced for audiences, grand and intimate, across continents, an island or few, a myriad of venues, restaurants, stages, and some weird places celebrating life on a decades-long journey of music, dance, joy and laughter.

Sharifa’s repertoire includes extensive training and study in Egyptian, Lebanese, Turkish, Saudi-Gulf, and Classic American styles, as well as Middle Eastern and North African folkloric dances.  Her performance career includes the NY/NJ metro area of supper clubs, ethnic restaurants, family celebrations, and artistic performance venues. Arriving in NC, she danced for restaurants and multiple events throughout NC metro areas and beyond.  Her authentic Oriental Dance or Raqs Sharqi style, musicality, technique, choreographic skill and stage presence combined with a genuine passion for Oriental music has been noted by dancers, master instructors, musicians, and enthusiastic audiences alike from California to Cairo.

An award-winning dance artist, Sharifa has appeared on NPR radio, cable TV, and museums, for educational programs and dance performances. She presented her Oriental Dance works twice for the annual NC Dance Alliance Showcase, alongside ballet, jazz, tap, and modern dance - a first and only for the statewide dance association.  In 2005, Sharifa created Qarisma Dance Arts to expand community awareness of authentic Middle Eastern Oriental dance and develop presentations that engage, educate, and entertain the community at large. In 2007, Sharifa received a substantial regional artist's grant, as an Oriental dance artist  – a first in NC. She also directed her Qarisma Dance Co. in performance at the inaugural Charlotte Dance Festival in 2006, as well as other NC arts events and festivals throughout the next decade.

Sharifa continues to actively share Middle Eastern and North African dance with the wider community, providing culturally-aware, engaging, and innovative presentations to public schools (K-12), universities, museums, arts councils, health and service organizations, equestrian events, corporate events, and of course, family weddings and celebrations.

A dynamic “teacher’s teacher”, Sharifa’s experiences and knowledge extend, without reserve, to her students and their own dance journeys. Focused on Middle Eastern dance as the true dance art it is, Sharifa provides a solid foundation and opportunity for all levels - hobbyists to professional dancers - to pursue their dance in a noncompetitive environment. Sharifa’s clear instruction coupled with constructive precise feedback enables her students to grow into well-rounded educated dancers in their chosen styles.  As an instructor serving a military post area, she is well-adapted to teaching multiple levels.

“Many dancers have had to change instructors with every residence (move) and weren’t in the right place long enough or at the right time to learn a complete level skill set – so filling their gaps is part of her teaching mission and keeps Sharifa fresh and sharp. Her focus on technique, musicality and student progress together with the ability to break down and communicate in a variety of learning styles provides a solid foundation for any style.”   Instructor of the Month, www.ncbellydance.org

Years of training and study with dance masters past and present, international experts, travel and research contribute to her on-going professional education. She recently attended the annual Arab Dance Seminar(again).

Sharifa has an expansive selection of class, technique, and choreography workshop topics, as well as *special topics for special events. (Did you know that Oriental dance is guaranteed to improve and strengthen your equestrian seat…and more?)

Based in the Sandhills region of south-central NC, Sharifa’s academic education includes post graduate studies in languages and history.  Her current projects include producing her own on-line classes, along with local weekly classes and in-house special workshops.  If she’s not dancing, she’s probably in the field with her horses.

Sharifa is currently booking workshops, speaking engagements, educational, and artist-in-residence programs through 2021.
